Trolley Running Along a Ghost Railway Route. Don't Miss the Glowing Tunnel
About this spot
The "Iwaki-Kita Line"—a plan to extend the former National Railways Iwaki Line into Shimane Prefecture. Although the railway bed including tunnels and bridges was completed, rails were never actually laid on this route. Now a tire-wheeled trolley-style sightseeing car runs leisurely along this abandoned roadbed. Traveling approximately 6 kilometers from Nishiki Town Station to Sozu Gorge Hot Spring Station in approximately 40 minutes, the open car windows offer exhilarating views of gorges and pastoral rice fields at close range. The highlight is the "Kirara Yume Tunnel" (きらら夢トンネル), shimmering with fluorescent stones. In this fantastical section where light art emerges from darkness, cheers erupt from all corners of the vehicle. Both railway enthusiasts and children will be captivated—this is the star of the course.
Tips
Operations are centered on weekends and holidays with dates varying by season, so checking the Nishiki Kairway official website for operation dates, times, and advance reservations is recommended. Parking available at Nishiki Town Station. The open vehicle means you should prepare for sun and wind with hats and light clothing.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes (one way). An afternoon departure allows comfortable connections after morning gorge trekking.
