Legend has it that a local fishing fleet manager built this shrine after receiving divine guidance from a white fox. The sight of 123 vermilion torii gates descending from the green headland toward the Japan Sea is Nagato's signature scenic vista, selected as one of CNN's "31 Most Beautiful Places in Japan." Walking through the tunnel of torii gates stretching about 100 meters down the pilgrimage path reveals a panorama of deep blue sea and rugged cliffs. Another famous feature is the offering box attached to the top of the grand torii gate, standing about 6 meters high. Successfully tossing coins is said to grant wishes, and watching visitors attempt this charming challenge is a beloved attraction.
Tips
Parking is paid (a few hundred yen for regular cars). Arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds of tour buses that arrive mid-morning. The pilgrimage path consists of descending slopes and stone steps, so wear comfortable shoes. The seaside is windy, so watch out for hats being blown away.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 15 minutes required. Early morning when tour groups are fewer allows for a leisurely walk and photography.
