Seawater Geyser Erupting from Cliff Crevice - National Designated Natural Monument
About this spot
This is a natural seawater geyser located at the cliff just next to Motonosumi Shrine, designated as both a national natural monument and scenic area. When incoming waves flow into sea caves, the compressed seawater and air violently burst up through rock crevices, creating white water columns that can reach dozens of meters high when conditions are right. The sight resembles a dragon ascending to heaven, earning the name "Ryugu no Ushio-fuki" (Dragon Palace Geyser), and has long been cherished as an auspicious sign of good harvests and abundant fishing. In addition to the dramatic geyser, you can enjoy dynamic coastal formations like columnar rock formations reflected in the blue sea.
Tips
Just a short walk from Motonosumi Shrine's parking area, no vehicle transfer needed. Dramatic geysers occur on high-wave days or during strong north winds; on calm days they are modest. Avoid getting too close to the cliff edge and watch your footing where spray has made surfaces wet.
Best time to visit
About 30 minutes required. Water columns reach higher with greater impact on high-wave or strong north wind days.
