Experience the Lifestyle of a Wealthy Merchant and Indigo Trade at Wakicho's Premier Indigo Merchant Residence
About this spot
The residence of the Yoshida family, whose business name was 'Sanao,' one of the most prosperous indigo merchants in Wakicho. Set on one of the largest estates in the Udatsu townscape, the main house, indigo storehouses, treasure storehouses, and a detached building are arranged around a central courtyard, with interiors open to the public. The accounting office displays period business tools, allowing you to intimately experience the lifestyle of wealthy merchants enriched by indigo. The view of the townscape from second-floor windows overlooking the udatsu is a composition you can only encounter here. Sitting on the veranda and gazing at the courtyard offers a quiet moment where time seems to flow slowly.
Tips
Shoes must be removed inside, so shoes that are easy to slip on and off are comfortable. The stairs to the second floor are steep, so watch your footing. Located on the main Udatsu townscape street, it's just a few minutes' walk from the roadside station parking lot.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Morning hours are quieter, and the light filtering into the courtyard is soft
