About this spot
A playhouse where kabuki, ballad storytelling, and films once entertained the townspeople of Wakicho. Its charm lies in the contrast between the retro Western-style facade in pale colors and the comprehensive Japanese-style theater mechanisms including a revolving stage, stage trap room, flower path, and quail-seating boxes. At one point, demolition was considered, but preservation was decided when the site was used for filming director Yoji Yamada's movie "Rainbow Hunter," after which it was restored to its original appearance. During a visit, you can ascend the stage, peek into the trap room, and take commemorative photos side-by-side as if you were actors—a delightful experience.
Tips
Located just a short walk from the Udatsu townscape. The interior has many level changes and steep stairs, so watch your footing. As the stage and seating are valuable structures, follow guidance signs and view them slowly.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 50 minutes. Before and after noon is relatively quiet, making it easier to photograph the stage and seating
