A Museum Tracing the Castle Town's History Through Treasures of the Hachisuka Family

Located within Tokushima Central Park at the edge of Tokushima Castle ruins, this museum houses artworks, crafts, weapons, and historical documents related to the Tokushima domain and its lord, the Hachisuka family. A meticulously crafted scale model of Tokushima Castle reconstructing the entire castle town is a must-see, as is the "Senyamaru," a rare surviving daimyo (feudal lord's) pleasure boat. Adjacent to the museum is the Former Tokushima Castle Formal Residence Garden, featuring dramatic dry landscape gardens created with abundant Awa blue stone and stroll-style gardens circling a pond. Starting your walk here to understand the castle town's complete layout will greatly enhance the clarity of your subsequent exploration of the area.
Tips
About a 10-minute walk from Tokushima Station. Mondays are typically closed, so check the opening calendar in advance. Your museum admission ticket also provides access to the Former Tokushima Castle Formal Residence Garden. If driving, the paid parking lot on the east side of Tokushima Central Park is convenient.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. Early morning right after opening, the museum is quiet, and the blue stones in the garden are beautifully illuminated by morning light.
