Fallen Clan Legends and Mountain Village Life Artifacts in a Thatched-Roof Manor
About this spot
After their defeat at the Battle of Dan-no-ura, members of the Heike clan are said to have fled deep into the mountains of Iya. The residence has been preserved as a folk museum, once inhabited by descendants of Horikawa Danki, said to have served as a court physician to Emperor Antoku. The substantial thatched-roof manor houses numerous displays of armor, swords, and other weaponry, as well as medicine cases, farming tools, and household goods that supported life in the mountain village—quietly recounting the lives the fallen clan built while living inconspicuously. The mountain landscape viewed from the garden courtyard is equally beautiful, adding historical romance to your journey toward the Kazurabashi bridge.
Tips
Located along the road heading toward the Iya area from Ōboke, it's conveniently situated for a stop on the way to the Kazurabashi bridge. Parking is available. Some areas inside require removing shoes before entering tatami rooms, so slip-on shoes make transitions smooth.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes required. The thatched-roof manor is most atmospheric when bathed in the soft afternoon light.
