A Thrilling Single-Span Bridge with Valley Views Through Log Gaps
About this spot
A suspension bridge approximately 45 meters long and 2 meters wide, constructed by weaving wild vine cords, designated as a National Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property. Approximately 14 meters above the water surface, the entire bridge sways with each step, and the blue depths of the Iya River are visible through the gaps in the log planks. Legend tells that the Heike fell clan members constructed the bridge from vines so they could sever it at any moment should pursuers approach—a symbol of the hidden gem region. The bridge is carefully reconstructed every few years by skilled craftspeople, preserving its traditional form. Beyond the bridge, souvenir shops and teahouses line the way, and taking a break with the area's specialty deko-mawashi (sweet treats) or salt-grilled sweetfish adds to the enjoyment.
Tips
The bridge is one-way only; once you step on, you cannot turn back. On weekends and holidays, queues form to cross, so allow extra time. The large parking lot at Kazurabashi Yume-Butai (Kazurabashi Dream Stage) is convenient. Be careful not to drop your smartphone on the swaying bridge, and pants-style clothing is recommended over skirts.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes required. Late afternoon is when group tours thin out, allowing leisurely exploration of the surroundings and sampling local foods.
