Sway across the Heike clan legend vine bridge—the secret finale
About this spot
Two vine bridges span the gorge at the deepest point of Iya Gorge, at the foot of Tsurugisan. Legend says the Heike clan built them for travel to and from Tsurugisan. Named "double" because the male bridge at about 44 meters and the female bridge at about 22 meters stand side by side crossing the gorge. Constructed from woven Shirakuchi vine, each step sways and sways, and through gaps in the bridge, you glimpse the clear stream below—a heart-pounding experience. Compared to the more touristy vine bridge in Iya, fewer people visit here, allowing you to savor the quietude of a secret retreat wrapped in deep forest and the sound of flowing water. There's also the "nosaru" experience, where you hand-haul yourself across the river on ropes—a fitting small adventure to end the day.
Tips
The forest path down to the gorge from the parking area is damp and slippery, so wear sturdy shoes. Winter closures may apply; check in advance for current operating status.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. The dappled light just before sunset softly illuminates the forest and vine bridge, making the gorge most beautiful at this time.
