Leisurely explore a mountain village where scarecrows outnumber the residents
About this spot
Along National Route 439 as you descend from Tsurugisan toward Iya Gorge lies a small settlement called Nagoro. Here, you'll encounter hundreds of scarecrows throughout the village—some working in fields, others waiting at bus stops, and some chatting on verandas like local grandmothers. There are far more scarecrows than actual residents, and remarkably, each scarecrow has a name and a backstory. Nostalgic, amusing, and somehow touching—an encounter with scarecrows blended into a mountain village landscape creates an unforgettable travel memory. As you walk through the settlement, search for your favorite scarecrow.
Tips
Free admission. Park in the designated lot within the settlement and explore on foot. Since the scarecrows are handmade by residents, observe them respectfully without touching—enjoy them through photography.
Best time to visit
About 30 minutes. Afternoon's gentle light warms the mountain village scenery and scarecrows even more.
