Start Your Day Biting into Fresh Bamboo Chikuwa Right from the Bamboo Stick

About this spot

A beloved long-established kamaboko (fish cake) shop representing Komatsushima's bamboo chikuwa specialty. The signature bamboo chikuwa is made by wrapping fresh fish paste around fresh bamboo and grilling it to a fragrant finish—a traditional Tokushima local flavor. Legend has it that chikuwa grilled on the beach was once presented to the entourage of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a storied memento of the historic harbor town. Hold the bamboo stick in your hand, drizzle sudachi soy sauce, and take a bite—the umami of fish and the aroma of bamboo spread through your mouth. The curry-flavored fish cutlet is also popular and perfect as a street food companion. At the direct sales shop, you might encounter freshly grilled pieces, making the first stick of the morning exceptionally delicious.

Tips

Parking spaces are available in front of the shop. Whether you encounter freshly grilled items depends on the time, so check at the counter. For souvenirs, a cooling bag is reassuring, and adding sudachi citrus enhances the fresh flavor.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes. Morning hours are quieter at the shop front, and if you catch freshly grilled items, the aroma is exceptional.
