A Park Where You Can Meet a Steam Locomotive and a Gigantic Kincho Tanuki Statue

About this spot

A park developed on the grounds of the former National Railway Komatsushima Line's Komatsushima Station, preserving memories of the harbor town's prosperous days as Shikoku's gateway to the sea. At the SL Memorial Square, a C12-type steam locomotive is preserved alongside a passenger car, where you can admire its impressive power up close. In the adjacent Tanuki Square, you'll be greeted by a towering Kincho Tanuki statue. It is a symbol of Komatsushima, the homeland of the Awa Tanuki War legend, and its humorous expression is a classic spot for commemorative photos. A leisurely walk across the grassy plaza rewards you with refreshing sea breezes from the harbor town, making for a pleasant detour after enjoying chikuwa.

Tips

Free admission makes it easy to drop by. Limited shade around the SL, so a hat is recommended in summer. For photos with the tanuki statue, stepping back a bit will better capture the statue's impressive size.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Morning light is soft, making photos of the SL and tanuki statue particularly beautiful.
