A long-established confectionery that has guarded its shop sign for generations at the temple gate of Zentsūji. The signature specialty is "katapan" (hard biscuits), said to originate from military rations used by the former Imperial Japanese Army. True to its name, the dough is baked until remarkably hard; it has an unpretentious sweetness and fragrant aroma that deepen with each bite. The selection ranges from small stone-baked biscuits to large rectangular ones, and some feature ginger flavoring. The old-fashioned style of weighing and selling directly from a glass display case is part of its charm. The quaint wooden shop front embodies the essence of a temple town's atmosphere, making it perfect for a post-pilgrimage snack. Due to its popularity, stock often runs out in the afternoon—an early visit is recommended.

Cash payment is reliable. True to its name, katapan is extremely hard, so the local way is to nibble bit by bit or slowly dissolve it in your mouth. The shop is just a short walk from the temple grounds and pairs perfectly with your pilgrimage visit.
