Conclude the Genpei Walk with Kawara-ke Tossing and a Crimson Sunset
About this spot
Named after a rock formation resembling a lion roaring toward the sea, this observation deck is Yashima's representative lookout. Below, Takamatsu City and its harbor spread out, with Meogi Island (女木島) and Ogi Island (男木島) and other Seto Inland isles floating beyond, while at dusk the sea and sky bathe in crimson—a spectacular vista. The signature activity is kawara-ke tossing, throwing small earthenware saucers. It's said to derive from a Genji warrior raising his victory cry and tossing his helmet, with the legend that successfully thrown pieces bring wishes to fruition. After a full day of walking through this ancient battlefield, honor the finale by etching into your heart the seascape that the samurai themselves once gazed upon, illuminated by the descending sun.
Tips
A short walk from Yashimaru. Kawara-ke pieces can be purchased at shops on the summit. If you're aiming for sunset views, check the sunset time in advance and plan your descent before dark. The observation deck faces cold sea breezes, so bring a cardigan or wrap. You can photograph the sunset using the railings without a tripod.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Around sunset is the prime time, when the Seto Inland Sea and Takamatsu City glow in crimson tones.
