About this spot
This gorge extends along the upper reaches of the Doki River, Kagawa's mightiest river, nestled in the bosom of the Sanuki Mountains. Over long millennia, the clear stream has carved granite into dramatic and massive rock formations, and potholes (glacial kettles) dot the river bed. A well-maintained walking path along the gorge offers intimate views of these natural formations. The verdant trees reflect in the water, and the gorge remains refreshingly cool even in summer. During spring's new growth and autumn's colors, the valley glows with particularly vibrant hues. After a day of traversing flower fields and irrigation ponds, walking through this gorge where only the sound of water and birdsong echo will deepen your appreciation of the natural depths of Mannō Town.
Tips
The gorge is easily accessible along Route 438 and conveniently located near the Michi-no-Eki Kotobami, where you can park and begin your walk. Some rocks along the path become wet and slippery, so wear sturdy footwear. When descending to the riverbank, keep small children in sight at all times.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Afternoon sunlight dappling through the canopy makes the water shimmer, creating the most pleasant walking experience.
