Marvel at one of Japan's largest irrigation ponds, associated with Kōbō Daishi Kūkai, from atop the embankment
About this spot
With a circumference of about 20 km and a storage capacity of approximately 15.4 million tons, this is one of Japan's largest agricultural irrigation ponds and an iconic symbol of "Sanuki Ponds." Built to sustain the farmland of the Sanuki Plain, which receives little rainfall, legend says the Buddhist monk Kōbō Daishi Kūkai directed the restoration of the breached embankment. Standing atop the embankment, the vast water surface reflecting the Sanuki Mountains spreads before you like an inland lake, gently overturning expectations of what an irrigation pond should be. A legend tells that a dragon god dwells in the pond, and the Kanno Shrine stands on its shores. The dramatic view from water level—so different from the perspective looking down from the adjacent Mannō Park hillside—is a highlight of the experience.
Tips
There is a parking space near the embankment, about 15 minutes by car from Yamauchi Udon. The top of the embankment is exposed with nothing to block the wind, so a light jacket is advisable. Some areas at the water's edge lack guardrails, so always hold hands with small children when walking. The view is best during daylight when the air is clear.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. On clear days when the air is crisp, you can see all the way to the Sanuki Mountains, and the blue of the lake surface shines even more brilliantly.
