The Sky Torii Gate Atop 404-Meter Inazumi Mountain: A Sea-Spanning Vista

About this spot

The main sanctuary of Takaya Shrine (高屋神社) sits atop Inazumi Mountain at 404 meters in Kanonji City. The view through the stone torii gate before the sanctuary—taking in Kanonji's streetscape and the Seto Inland Sea (Hii Strait) beyond—is called the "Sky Torii Gate" and ranks among the Shikoku region's most spectacular viewpoints. The torii gate appears to float in the sky, and the panorama of sea and city beyond it is a reward reserved for those who've made the climb. Affectionately called "Inazumi-san" by locals, it has drawn worshippers for generations. That final steep stone staircase on the approach is the gateway to this moment—turn around once you've climbed each step, and the vista spreading before you will take your breath away.

Tips

Vehicles can drive most of the way up, but weekend and holiday vehicle restrictions may be in effect, requiring shuttle bus use—check Kanonji City's information beforehand. The final stone steps are quite steep, so use a bag with both hands free and wear non-slip shoes. Bring a light jacket, as the mountaintop can be windy.

Best time to visit

Plan for about 1 hour 30 minutes. Late afternoon light becomes soft, and the sea and streetscape begin to glow gently.
