About this spot
A spectacular sight on Shodoshima Island where roughly 800 rice paddies, large and small, layer upon the mountainside slopes, selected as one of Japan's Terraced Paddy Fields One Hundred Choices. The paddies are nourished by Yufune Spring Water (湯船の水), a pristine flow that springs from Yufuneyama Mountain, also counted among Japan's One Hundred Selection Springs. A leisurely walk along stone-walled field paths reveals ever-changing landscapes—water surfaces reflecting the sky, rice swaying in the breeze—each visit a different encounter. The view from a high plateau overlooking the paddies is breathtaking, a place where you can feel the rice cultivation that island people have preserved for generations—a fitting close to your journey.
Tips
Park near Komame Cafeteria and walk from there. Field paths are narrow and slippery after rain, so watch your footing. The paddies are farmers' precious workplaces, so stay on walking paths and avoid entering the fields. Bring drinking water.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours required. Evening's soft light illuminating the paddies' water surface is especially beautiful.
