Morning Castle Walk at a Date Family Stronghold with an Original Tower Atop Stone Walls
About this spot
A symbol of Uwajima, this castle preserves one of just twelve original castle towers remaining in Japan. Built on a foundation laid by the renowned castle-builder Tōdō Takatora, it later became the seat of the Uwajima Date clan and passed through their hands for generations. The white-walled three-story tower is designated a National Important Cultural Property. Tradition holds that the sea once lapped at the castle's very walls, and seawater was drawn into the moats, making it a true maritime fortress. From the tower, you can command a sweeping view of both Uwa Bay and the castle town below. The entire castle mountain has been transformed into a verdant park, and the climbing path through moss-covered stone walls and dense woodland is perfect for a morning walk. Inside the tower, the steep wooden stairs and massive timber beams offer an authentic sense of the craftsmanship that characterizes an original castle structure.
Tips
The stone steps from the castle gate to the tower take 15–20 minutes to climb, so sturdy walking shoes are essential. There are two entry gates—one at Kuwaori Gate and one at Agaritatemon Gate—with municipal parking available nearby. In summer, you'll work up a sweat on the ascent, so bring water.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. In the morning, the air is crisp and the views of Uwa Bay and the castle town from the tower are crystal clear.
