Museum Where You Can Experience the History of the Murakami Pirates, a Japan Heritage Site

Located in Miyakubo in northern Ōshima Island, this museum tells the story of the Murakami Pirates, considered the largest pirate group in Japan—particularly the Noshima Murakami clan. As the core facility representing the Japan Heritage story 'The Murakami Pirates,' the museum displays artifacts and historical documents excavated from Noshima Castle ruins, as well as reconstructed kobaya (fast pirate ships). You can learn about the true nature of the pirates who, guided by a code of conduct, maintained order on the seas and dominated the strait by reading the tidal currents. The armor and kosode (traditional short-sleeved robe) try-on experience is popular with both children and adults. From the observation deck, you can actually see the Noshima Castle ruins, a sea fortress surrounded by fierce tidal currents, creating a moment when the exhibits connect with the real landscape before your eyes.
Tips
The facility has a bicycle parking area, making it easy to stop by during your ride. Armor try-on is a favorite photo opportunity, so be prepared with a camera. From the nearby port, you can also take a boat to experience the tidal currents around Noshima Castle ruins (additional fee), which makes for an excellent combination if you have time.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. After viewing the exhibits, heading up to the observation deck allows you to confirm the Noshima Castle ruins you just learned about with your own eyes.
