A ridge drive along Prefectural Road 383—the course's finest sky road experience

About this spot

A highland stretching along Prefectural Road 383 as you follow the Shikoku Karst ridge from Tengu Highland toward the Himetsuruichi plateau. White karrenfeld rock layered around the gentle Gojō Castle peak perfectly captures the essence of karst landscape. The road cuts through pastoral grasslands where you'll encounter grazing cattle right beside the road. This ridge road at roughly 1,400 meters altitude is also called the "Sky Road," offering the exhilaration of vast open skies and grasslands—one of Shikoku's finest driving experiences. Numerous pull-off areas dot the route, perfect for stopping at your favorite views and leisurely exploring at your own pace.

Tips

Prefectural Road 383 has narrow sections; please yield to oncoming traffic. Cattle may be near the roadside, so drive cautiously. There are no gas stations at altitude, so fill up at the base before ascending—a must. Begin your descent before dark for a safe return.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 2 hours. As evening approaches, the light softens and the grassland transforms golden.
