Ashizurimisaki Cape juts out as the southernmost point of Shikoku and is one of Kochi Prefecture's most spectacular scenic spots, offering a 270-degree vista of the horizon from the observation platform atop the cliffs. The vast, unobstructed ocean gently curves on the horizon—so immense that people say you can actually feel the Earth's roundness. The white Ashizurimisaki Lighthouse standing on the cape boasts one of Japan's largest scales and stands out beautifully against the deep blue sea and white foam of the Kuroshio Current. The park grounds leading to the observation platform feature a tunnel-like walking trail enveloped by camellia trees, making for a pleasant walk as you listen to the sound of the waves. The panorama viewed in the clear morning air is a view worthy of being the highlight of this journey.
Tips
Free parking available near the observation platform. Early morning before tour buses arrive is quiet and recommended. The cape's tip is windy, so be careful not to lose your hat. The walking trail is well-maintained but has some elevation changes, so wear comfortable shoes.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Morning air is clearest, and the horizon and lighthouse illuminated by the morning sun are most beautiful.
