Japan's fourth national museum, opening after those in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara, with the mission to 'understand Japanese culture formation from an Asian historical perspective.' The massive building of glass and curves, nestled along the hillside, is a sight in itself. The main Cultural Exchange Exhibition Room traces the history of exchange between Japan and Asia, and even Europe, from the Paleolithic period through the early modern era on an epic scale. The free interactive exhibition room 'Ajippa' lets visitors experience the traditional clothing, musical instruments, and toys of various Asian countries, making it hugely popular with families. Connected directly from the Dazaifu Tenmangu side via the 'Rainbow Tunnel' of escalators and moving walkways, it pairs perfectly with shrine visits.
Tips
The museum is closed Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a holiday), so confirm opening hours in advance. The Cultural Exchange Exhibition rotates frequently, offering new discoveries on each visit. Allow extra time if special exhibitions are on display. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as the museum is expansive.

Approximately 2 hours. An ample 2 hours starting mid-afternoon allows you to thoroughly explore the cultural exchange displays and Ajippa.
