Freshly Baked Plum Blossom Mochi Stroll and Approach Lunch
About this spot
The stone-paved approach running from Nishi-Tetsudazaifu Station to the entrance of Dazaifu Tenmangu is lined with souvenir shops and dining establishments. The star is undoubtedly the local specialty: plum blossom mochi (umegae-mochi). This acclaimed confection features a thin mochi shell encasing sweet red bean paste, stamped with a plum blossom imprint and baked to a fragrant golden finish. According to tradition, an elderly woman offered mochi attached to a plum branch to Michizane upon his arrival in Dazaifu. Each shop's baking technique and dough flavor vary subtly, making a taste comparison enjoyable. The Starbucks designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, with its distinctive wooden lattice framework forming cave-like passages, is another signature spot on the approach—a street that delights both eyes and palate with every step.
Tips
Plum blossom mochi is best enjoyed fresh from the oven. Popular shops have lines, but turnover is quick. Restaurants get crowded during peak lunch hours; slightly staggering your timing helps. Dispose of any litter from snacking in the bins at the shop where you made your purchase—it's proper etiquette.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Visiting slightly outside the peak lunch hour allows you to enjoy both the snacking and lunch at leisure.
