Yanagawa is a castle town water village where canals crisscross the entire town. A boat tour through these waterways aboard a doncobune (flat-bottomed wooden boat) is the signature Yanagawa experience. With a single pole, the boatman skillfully guides the boat as it glides beneath willow groves and past brick warehouses. As you listen to the boatman's spirited narration and traditional boat songs, the thrill of ducking under extremely low bridges keeps your head down and your heart racing. The townscape viewed from the water presents an entirely different face than what you see while walking—a new Yanagawa unfolds before your eyes. Seasonal flowers and greenery color the waterside; in winter, kotatsu-boats (boats fitted with heated tables) make their appearance. This slowness of time itself is pure nourishment—and the true highlight of this course.

Tips

The boats have no roof, so a hat or sunscreen is recommended on sunny days. Follow the boatman's signals when ducking under low bridges. Weekends can get crowded; try an early morning departure or reserve in advance. Keep your luggage light and on your lap for comfort.
