Established as the summer retreat of the Yanagawa clan lords, the Tachihana family continues to preserve this residence. The entire estate is designated a National Scenic Site as the "Tachihana Clan Garden," and Shotoen (松濤園), a pond-and-spring landscape garden shaded by dark pines, presents a picture-perfect vista when viewed from the great hall. Within the garden stands an elegant white Western-style building erected as a reception hall, creating a unique and refined space where Japanese and Western aesthetics coexist. The adjoining Tachihana Family History Museum displays fine treasures such as armor and wedding furnishings passed down through the clan, allowing visitors to glimpse the lifestyle of Yanagawa's ruling family up close. Operated also as a restaurant inn, the entire facility carries the refined atmosphere of its historic architecture.

Tips

We recommend a leisurely tour of the garden, residence, and museum combined. Sitting in the great hall and gazing out at the garden affords an appreciation of how the garden composition has been deliberately calculated for this vantage point. The historic building requires careful footsteps and quiet observation; wear comfortable shoes.
