A Historic Eel Restaurant Said to Be the Birthplace of Bamboo Basket-Steamed Eel

About this spot

This historic establishment, founded over three hundred years ago, is said to be the birthplace of yanagawa-style unagi seiro-mushi (eel steamed in bamboo baskets). The preparation is uniquely Yanagawa: a secret-recipe sauce is spread over rice, topped with succulent grilled eel and egg ribbons, then slowly steamed in a bamboo basket. The steaming allows the sauce to permeate every grain of rice, the rich flavor of the eel becomes one with it—and the dish remains piping hot from first bite to last. The venerable Japanese house aesthetic and serene tatami seating embody the grace of an establishment with such long tradition. The sight—and aroma—that rises when you lift the basket's lid is an experience every visitor to Yanagawa should encounter at least once.

Tips

Seiro-mushi is prepared to order and takes time to steam; expect waits during lunch rush. Arriving early or making a reservation is recommended. The aroma clings to clothing; fold your jacket before entering.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Visit right after opening or just before the lunch rush to minimize wait times.
