A two-story wooden station at the entrance to the Mojiko Retro District, its symmetrical, graceful design exemplifies the Neo-Renaissance style. The first station building to be designated as a National Important Cultural Property, it has been carefully restored to its original Taisho-modern appearance after preservation work. The high ceilings and sturdy pillars of the concourse are striking, while the waiting room preserves period charm. Photo opportunities abound. From the platform, you can capture the retro station with trains arriving and departing—a shot unique to this location. A symbol of the port town that has walked hand-in-hand with Kyushu's railway history, your Taisho romance walk begins here.
Tips
As an active station, please be mindful of commuters during photos. Early mornings are less crowded and easier for capturing the whole station. Visit during quieter moments between train arrivals and departures for a leisurely look around.
Best time to visit
Takes about 45 minutes. Morning hours when clear light illuminates the wooden building and crowds are thin—ideal shooting weather.
