A shrine nestled in the mountains of Sakurai, Itoshima City, founded in the early Edo period with patronage from the Kuroda clan, feudal lords of Fukuoka. The main hall, worship hall, and tower gate are designated cultural properties of Fukuoka Prefecture, preserving their original Edo-era appearance. The shrine building with its hinoki-bark roof, appearing beyond the tree-lined approach, takes your breath away with its solemnity. Beyond the stone steps in the grounds stands Sakurai Daijingū (櫻井大神宮), enshrining the deities of Ise Shrine (伊勢神宮), renowned as a place to pray for good relationships and matches. In recent years it has gained attention as a destination for fans of an idol group bearing the same name, but its true charm lies in its serene atmosphere and architectural beauty. Tips

The approach has plenty of shade and is cool in the morning, but features stone pavements and steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Reaching Sakurai Daijingū requires climbing further stone steps from the main hall, so allow some extra time. The parking lot is free, but can get crowded on weekends during daytime—early morning visits are recommended.
