Itoshima's finest scenic vista: white torii gate and the married rocks floating in the sea

About this spot

A scenic vista stretching along the northern coast of the Itoshima Peninsula, virtually synonymous with Itoshima tourism. Beyond the white torii gate standing on the sandy beach, married rocks bound with straw rope float as if leaning toward each other, their contrast with the blue Genkai Sea (玄界灘) captivating the heart no matter how many times you see it. This is sacred coastland carefully preserved as the grounds of Sakurai Shrine, which you visited earlier, and it was selected as one of Japan's finest beaches. Famous as a sunset viewing spot, the sea glimmering in daytime sunlight is equally extraordinary. Along the surrounding coastline, stylish cafés and curio shops are scattered, offering seaside strolls in the sea breeze. Raise your camera, and every frame captures the essence of Itoshima.

Tips

The classic photographic angle is from the sandy beach where the torii gate and married rocks align in a single line. If wading to the waterline, waterproof shoes are recommended. Limited parking spaces along the prefectural road get crowded on weekends—consider paid parking lots nearby. Few shaded areas, so a hat is helpful.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour required. Late morning provides the best front-light conditions for capturing the sea's blue hue.
