A basalt cave, one of Japan's largest, gaping open on the cape jutting into the Genkai Sea (玄界灘) at the western tip of the Itoshima Peninsula, designated as a natural monument. The rock face, with hexagonal and octagonal columnar fracture formations bundled together, resembles a giant pipe organ. Access to the cave interior is only possible via a sightseeing boat departing from Akaya Fishing Port; on calm days, the boat approaches right to the cave mouth for a spectacular experience. After disembarking, walk the promenade upward to the Akaya-no-Ōmon Park Observation Deck atop the cape. Passing through the verdant tunnel called Totoro's Forest, a grand panorama of the Genkai Sea and Itoshima's coastline unfolds before you. A masterpiece of natural formations worthy of being the highlight of your coastal drive.

Tips

Sightseeing boats may suspend operations due to weather and wave conditions; confirm operations beforehand for peace of mind. Winds are strong aboard the boat, so a light jacket is recommended. The trail to the observation deck features continuous uphill stretches, so wear comfortable shoes. To enjoy both the boat and observation deck, allow ample time for pacing.
