A waterfall approximately 24 meters high cascading down the mountainside of Hagane Mountain in the southern Itoshima City, designated a scenic site of Fukuoka Prefecture. The water dividing into multiple streams as it flows down the rock face resembles white silk threads, giving the waterfall its name. The area surrounding the waterfall is cooler than the city below, and a refreshing breeze blows with water spray—nature's air conditioner. A promenade is developed right up to the falls, and the negative ions from the mist are wonderfully invigorating. A tea house at the base offers specialties such as salt-grilled mountain trout, flowing sōmen noodles, and hand-made soba, with a rest overlooking the waterfall being a mountain luxury. Also known as a hydrangea viewing spot, concluding a day that began with sea vistas with mountain coolness provides the perfect finale.
Tips
The parking lot to falls involves walking uphill terrain; comfortable walking shoes are essential. Near the falls, water spray makes footing slippery, so supervise small children carefully. Summer weekends attract crowds seeking cool refuge; arrive with time to spare. The mountain location is cooler than the city, so bring a light layer.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. Late afternoon, as sunlight softens, the shade and water sounds become even more soothing.
