The head shrine of all Suiten Shrines found throughout Japan is located here on the banks of the Chikugo River in Kurume. Revered as the deity of safe childbirth, child-rearing, and protection from water-related accidents, this ancient shrine is believed to be the origin of the Suiten Shrine in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, which was established when the Arima clan (lords of Kurume) brought a branch of this main shrine to their Edo residence. The shrine grounds face the banks of the Chikugo River, and after paying respects, a walk down to the riverside offers a pleasant moment gazing at the gentle flow of Kyushu's greatest river. Families with children visit frequently for blessing ceremonies and good health prayers, making this a perfect place to begin your journey and pray for a safe day ahead—a temple that embodies the pride of the town.
Tips
Entry to the shrine grounds is free, and there is a parking lot available. The shrine can be busy with families bringing children for blessings and safe pregnancy prayers in the morning, so visiting early is recommended if you prefer a quieter experience. After your visit, a walk to the Chikugo River levee offers refreshing riverside breezes and excellent photo opportunities.
