Pond-Circuit Garden with the Castle Keep as Borrowed Scenery from the Study

About this spot

A cultural facility consisting of a study and a pond-circuit garden, recreated on the former villa site of the Ogasawara clan, feudal lords of Kokura. In the shoin-style study building, when you sit on the broad veranda, Kokura Castle's keep appears beyond the garden pond, enveloping you in a serenity you'd never expect in the heart of the city. As you follow the garden paths, the reflection of trees and stone arrangements in the water changes with each step, and despite its compact size, the garden's attractions are endless. The facility also displays exhibitions related to etiquette and samurai household life, and you can enjoy matcha tea and wagashi sweets at the tea pavilion. A tranquil space where you can linger in the afterglow of the castle.

Tips

A combination ticket with Kokura Castle offers savings. Since the study requires removing your shoes, slip-on shoes make transitions smooth. If you wish to enjoy matcha at the tea pavilion, leave some buffer time so the snack doesn't interfere with your lunch at Tanga Market.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 45 minutes. The morning light diffusing across the pond is when the study and greenery mirrored in the water are most beautiful.
