Built by Hosokawa Tadaoki at this strategic location overlooking the Kanmon Strait, this castle is cherished as the symbol of Kokura. The keep employs a rare architectural style called "karazukuri," where there is no eave between the fourth and fifth floors and the top floor projects substantially outward. From the observation zone on the top floor, you can gaze across the flow of the Murasakigawa River and the entirety of Kokura's townscape. Inside the castle are exhibitions and experiential corners telling Kokura's history, and the bold tiger paintings—the welcoming tiger and the farewell tiger—are also highlights. Surrounded by the lush Katsuyama Park and adjacent to Riveralk Kitakyushu, it's the ideal starting point for your city walk and a namesake castle worthy of its fame.

Tips

It's about a 15-minute walk from JR Kokura Station, and the Riveralk Kitakyushu parking lot is conveniently accessible. If you plan to visit both the castle and the garden, check with the ticket window about combination tickets for savings. The castle keep involves climbing stairs, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The morning just after opening is quieter, allowing you to savor the view from the top floor of the keep in peaceful solitude.
