The Magnificent Coal Baron's Residence with Noh Stage and Cedar-Panel Paintings

About this spot

The former home of Takatori Yoshiyoshi, known as the 'Coal King of Hizen' (肥前の炭鉱王) for his coal mining operations, designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Situated near Karatsu Castle along the coast, this grand mansion features traditional Japanese architecture as its foundation while also incorporating Western-style rooms. The highlight is a full-scale Noh stage built within the residence itself. Other notable features include cedar-panel paintings depicting flowers and creatures, and decorative transoms with designs unique to each room—craftsmanship is evident in every corner, bearing testament to the prosperity of Karatsu during the coal mining era. Following the prescribed route reveals playful details in every nook and cranny; even those without a particular interest in architecture find themselves captivated by this remarkable space.

Tips

Shoes must be removed when viewing the interior. There are restrictions on photography inside; follow the staff's guidance. Since you'll be walking on tatami mats for an extended period, wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off, and wear non-slip socks for comfort.
