Karatsu: A Day Strolling Through the Castle Town with Sea Breezes, Karatsu Castle and Niji no Matsubara
A full-day course through the castle town of Karatsu (唐津), Saga Prefecture, facing the Genkai Nada (玄界灘), walking with the sea breeze. In the morning, visit Karatsu Castle (唐津城), the symbol of Karatsu. From the top floor of the main tower, affectionately known as Maizuru Castle (舞鶴城), enjoy panoramic views of the gracefully curving Niji no Matsubara (虹の松原) and Karatsu Bay. Next, visit the Former Takataki Residence (旧高取邸), once the home of coal magnate Takatori Yoshiyoshi, and admire the luxurious design where Japanese and Western aesthetics blend seamlessly, including a Noh stage and cedar-panel paintings. At lunch, savor the local specialty Karatsu Burger in the dappled sunlight of Niji no Matsubara. After a leisurely walk along the tree-lined path lined by approximately one million black pines, finish at Kagami Yama Observatory (鏡山展望台) at 284 meters elevation. From this vantage point, witness the grand arc of the green pine forest hugging the coastline and the shimmering Karatsu Bay beyond. The moment when you see the entire path you've walked from this high vantage point is the greatest reward of this course.
