Tonbai walls (トンバイ塀) are earthen walls constructed by packing together spent kiln tools, disposable kiln equipment, and ceramic fragments—a signature feature of Arita's Uchiyama District (内山地区) back alleys. The bricks and ceramic shards embedded in these walls create mosaic-like patterns, each one unique and unrepeatable. The closer you look, the more you feel the accumulated history of this pottery town. Unlike the stately merchant houses along the main streets, these alleys retain the intimate atmosphere of everyday life—the true essence of an Arita stroll.
