Tonbai refers to fire-resistant bricks used to build climbing kilns. Tonbai walls (トンバイ塀) are earthen walls constructed by packing together spent kiln tools, disposable kiln equipment, and ceramic fragments—a signature feature of Arita's Uchiyama District (内山地区) back alleys. The bricks and ceramic shards embedded in these walls create mosaic-like patterns, each one unique and unrepeatable. The closer you look, the more you feel the accumulated history of this pottery town. Unlike the stately merchant houses along the main streets, these alleys retain the intimate atmosphere of everyday life—the true essence of an Arita stroll. These back alleys are local residential streets—keep your voice low and watch for passing cars and bicycles. The walls belong to private homes and kilns, so refrain from touching or leaning against them. The narrow lanes require you to check your surroundings before taking photographs.
