A Shrine Where a Porcelain Torii Gate Watches Over the Pottery Town

A shrine uniquely characteristic of a pottery town, enshrining Emperor Ojin (応神天皇) as the principal deity, along with Nabeshima Naoshige (鍋島直茂公), the founder of the clan, and Lee Sampy (李参平), the founding father of Arita pottery. The main attraction is the magnificent porcelain torii gate adorned with indigo-dyed arabesque patterns. Throughout the grounds, Arita pottery offerings grace the landscape—from porcelain guardian lions to large water vessels and even railings. Another signature feature is the JR Sasebo Line (JR佐世保線) that runs across the stone steps of the approach path. Witnessing trains passing directly in front of you during your prayers is a rare spectacle found nowhere else in Japan. The shrine is also famous for its porcelain amulets and wooden prayer plaques, making it the perfect place to begin a day in Arita.
Tips
Because the railway crosses the approach path, be sure to stop and wait when the train alarm sounds. The grounds feature stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Porcelain amulets are delicate and prone to cracking—protect them carefully in your bag once received.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Morning is recommended when the crisp light beautifully illuminates the white porcelain torii gate.
