About this spot

Nestled in a valley surrounded by towering rock formations, this pottery village is home to numerous workshops. Long ago, the Saga clan (Nabeshima clan) established official kilns here to produce ceramics for presentation to the shogun, guarding the potters strictly behind a checkpoint to prevent advanced techniques from spreading elsewhere. The name 'Secret Kiln Village' derives from this history. The townscape, with its stone-paved slopes and lined brick chimneys, is picturesquely beautiful, and porcelain adorns railings and wall surfaces throughout—a distinctly pottery village feature. You can wander freely along historic sites like the checkpoint ruins while exploring pottery shops to find vessels of your choice.

Tips

Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes are essential due to the stone-paved slopes. If driving, use the parking area near the village entrance. When purchasing ceramics, have them wrapped carefully and carry them by hand to ensure safety. Most workshops close in the evening, so visit during daylight hours.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Morning, when light streams into the valley, is the most pleasant time for exploring the townscape.
