Ancient Shrine for Beautiful Skin: Blessing from the Catfish Messenger
About this spot
This shrine, located in the heart of Ureshino Hot Spring Town, is dedicated to Toyotamahime, daughter of the sea god. Toyotamahime is revered as the goddess of beautiful skin, drawing worshippers from far and wide seeking blessings for radiant complexion and fortunate love. The highlight is the white catfish statue, said to be the divine messenger of Toyotamahime. The shrine's unique custom involves gently pouring water over this white catfish figure using a ladle while praying for beautiful, smooth skin—a ritual unique to Ureshino. Situated right in the heart of the famous hot spring town known for its skin-beautifying waters, a visit here combined with a stroll through town amplifies the sense of receiving divine blessings. It's a charming, intimate shrine with classical appeal—perfect for a yukata-clad visitor.
Tips
The shrine is located in the center of the hot spring town and is just a short walk from Siebold's Foot Bath. Since the grounds are compact, visiting in the early morning when few people are around allows for a peaceful visit. Protective charms related to beautiful skin are popular, so check the charm counter if interested.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 40 minutes. Morning hours, when fewer worshippers are present, allow you to spend unhurried time at the catfish statue making your beautiful skin wishes.
