Hilltop Observatory: Panoramic Views of Tosu City and the Chikushi Plain
About this spot
A park encompassing Asahiyama mountain on the west side of Tosu City, long beloved as a refuge for residents. The summit is said to be where a mountain castle once stood, and from the observation plaza at the peak, you can view the entire Tosu cityscape, the Chikushi Plain's rice paddies, and distant mountains all around. Below stretches the image of Tosu as a transportation hub of Kyushu, where railways and expressways intersect. Known also as a cherry blossom viewing spot, the shaded garden paths are pleasant during green seasons and perfect for settling a satisfied stomach from udon before afternoon shopping. Resting on a bench to enjoy the panorama replenishes energy for afternoon purchases.
Tips
Reaching the summit involves uphill paths and stairs; wear comfortable walking shoes. The observation plaza has little shade, so bring a hat and water during summer. If resting on benches to enjoy views, it's recommended to purchase beverages at the station beforehand.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 50 minutes. On clear days, you can see deep into the Chikushi Plain.
