Japan's Only Authentic Confucius Shrine with a Brilliantly Colored Main Sanctuary

About this spot

Japan's only authentic Chinese-style Confucius shrine dedicated to Confucius, the founder of Confucianism. The building's red-lacquered pillars and gleaming glazed-tile roofs showcase brilliant colors, preserving traditional Chinese palatial architecture. In the central courtyard stand rows of white stone statues of 72 wise disciples of Confucius, and viewing and comparing each figure's expression is itself worthwhile. An adjacent Chinese History Museum showcases Chinese artworks and cultural artifacts. Within minutes of walking from the church and mansion district, you suddenly shift to a Chinese world—this striking contrast is the essence of a Nagasaki stroll.

Tips

The contrast in atmosphere from the mansions is enjoyable, so it's recommended to walk here from the Glover Garden area. The brilliantly colored building is especially striking on clear days with good lighting, so check your camera's battery beforehand. It is just a short walk to Oranda-zaka.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. The brilliantly colored shrine is most beautiful on a clear afternoon when it gleams against blue skies
