The day's greatest highlight—a landing cruise to Hashima (端島), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once thriving as an undersea coal mining island, Hashima earned the affectionate name "Battleship Island" because its concrete apartment buildings crowded onto the small island resembled a warship. As your ship leaves Nagasaki Harbor and passes the shipyard cranes into open waters, that distinctive island silhouette eventually appears on the horizon, and the deck erupts with excitement. After landing, walk the maintained viewing pathway and observe the coal mining facilities and apartment ruins up close with your guide. The serenity and power of this once-crowded maritime city cannot be experienced through videos alone.
Tips
Boarding requires advance reservation. If seas are rough, you may only be able to cruise around the island rather than land; allow flexibility in your schedule. The viewing pathway offers no shade or shops; sun protection and water are essential in summer. Hats with chin straps are recommended as the sea breeze easily blows them away.
Best time to visit
About three hours required. Calm seas and clear sunny days offer the highest chance of landing, and blue skies make the island silhouette stand out beautifully.
