Affectionately called "Osuwasan" by the people of Nagasaki, this chief shrine is the stage for the autumn Nagasaki Kunchi Festival, renowned for its spirited ceremonial dances. After climbing the long flight of stone stairs along the approach, you'll find yourself surrounded by trees with sweeping views of Nagasaki's cityscape. Throughout the grounds, you'll discover the yin-yang stone, believed to bring good fortune in relationships, and uniquely expressive guardian lion statues positioned for prayers aligned with specific wishes - making a "lion statue tour" an enjoyable part of your visit. Since it's just a short walk from the Nagasaki History and Culture Museum, it's the perfect place to stop after tracing the city's history. Halfway up the stone stairs, turn around to glimpse the landscape characteristic of this hilly town.
Tips
The approach consists of a long flight of stone stairs, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. Some of the guardian lion statues and yin-yang stone are not easily located, so check the grounds map before exploring for a smooth experience. The area becomes extremely crowded during Nagasaki Kunchi Festival season.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. In the bright daylight before noon, the view of the city from atop the stairs will be particularly clear.
