Evening Scenic Spot Overlooking Sasebo Harbor and the Ninety-Nine Islands

About this spot

An observation terrace developed near the summit of Yumibari-dake, which rises behind the Sasebo cityscape. The allure of the view here lies in being able to capture Sasebo Harbor, the city, and the Ninety-Nine Islands islands in a single vista. Beyond the harbor's passing vessels and the rows of homes, island silhouettes bathed in the setting sun glimmer. As the sun descends, sea and sky gradually bathe in crimson hue, and lights begin to twinkle throughout the city—a moment of unparalleled beauty. Having viewed the Ninety-Nine Islands from the water's surface and observation terraces throughout the day, witnessing them one last time from this high vantage point in the fading light is a fitting finale to your journey.

Tips

While you can drive nearly to the summit, the winding mountain road requires careful driving. Wind at dusk can bring a chill, so bringing a jacket is advisable. The spot is also known as a night-view destination; if time permits, staying after sunset is recommended.

Best time to visit

Plan for approximately 1 hour. As the sun begins to descend, sea and city are bathed in soft, gentle light.
