Standing on a hilltop jutting into the Hirado Strait, this 'ocean castle' of the Hirado clan's Matsuura family is surrounded by sea on three sides. According to tradition, it was built following the yamaga-ryu fortification design principles taught by military theorist Yamaga Sokō, and the scene of the sea glimmering just beyond the stone walls is rare among Japanese castles. From the tower, you'll enjoy a sweeping 360-degree view: the vermillion Hirado Bridge, ships crossing the strait, and the castle town's tiled roofs. The castle grounds are dotted with attractions such as the 'Tanuki Tower' (狸櫓, beloved for its playful nickname) and the Kita-Toraiguchi Gate (北虎口門), and the climb itself up the stone steps while breathing in the sea breeze sets a wonderful tone for your journey.

Tips

Wear comfortable walking shoes, as stone steps and slopes lead from the base to the tower. The castle grounds are maintained as a park, and you can also enjoy views of the Hirado Strait beyond the stone walls from the seaside path. On windy days, bring a light jacket to wear at the tower, where sea breezes can be strong.
