Red Brick Church by the Sea: A Cathedral Conveying Goto's Prayer-Filled History

About this spot

A red brick church standing by the tranquil inlet of Okuura on the northern part of Fukue Island. Built by missionaries after the prohibition on Christianity was lifted, it is one of Goto's most representative early stone sanctuaries, and its dignified Gothic façade facing the sea has long remained a symbol of the island's faith. The interior is now open as a museum displaying artifacts related to Hidden Christians who endured the age of persecution, along with prayer implements. When the tide rises, the sea approaches right to the edge of the sanctuary, creating a sight of red brick and azure sea found nowhere else. A place befitting the start of a Goto pilgrimage, where the heart naturally stills.

Tips

Since it remains an active place of prayer, please observe quiet viewing. Photography may be restricted inside the museum—please follow posted guidelines. Services and events may close the museum, so confirm in advance once your itinerary is set.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Morning visits are recommended when the red brick is beautifully reflected by the early light.
