From a Rounded Volcano Cloaked in Grass: Sweeping Views of Fukue and the Sea
About this spot
A volcano rising immediately behind Fukue's city center, entirely cloaked in soft grass. Its bare, gentle ridge drawing an inverted-bowl silhouette is the symbol of Fukue Island, visible from anywhere on the island. A walking trail extends along the mountain's slopes, and climbing only partway opens a grand panorama overlooking Fukue's townscape and harbor, as well as the islands floating in the azure sea. Sitting on the grass and being caressed by sea breezes is island time itself. At the base stands an observatory popular for stargazing, and the mountain has long been cherished by locals as a place for kite-flying and picnicking—a generous, open summit.
Tips
The slopes are fully exposed to sunlight, so bring a hat and water. Winds from the sea can be strong on some days, so bring a light jacket. The grass slopes can be slippery, so wear comfortable sneakers.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. In the crisp morning air, the blue of the sea is especially vivid.
