Just one step past the roadside in Takamori Town, a stone stairway unfolds through a dense stand of cedars, flanked on both sides by moss-covered stone lanterns. This scene, with dappled sunlight filtering through the trees, is known as 'the gateway to another world' and is also famous as the model for the setting of an animated film. Climbing the stone steps to the shrine building and continuing up the steep mountain path beyond, you will encounter Ugetoi Rock—a massive wind cave that pierces straight through a towering cliff face. Known as a fortunate stone said to help break through all difficulties and achieve goals, standing before it leaves visitors awestruck by its sheer presence. A power spot of southern Aso, the shrine is wrapped in forest silence and mystery.

Tips

The approach features a long series of stone steps uphill, and after rain the moss can be slippery—sturdy footwear is essential. The path to Ugetoi Rock is steep; allow plenty of time and energy. The forest is dim even in summer and insects are numerous, so bring insect repellent for peace of mind.
